Murphy enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in July 1980 and attended Basic
Training at Alameda, CA. He served aboard the USCGC Westwind until 1981. He
reported to Electronic Technician "A" school at Governors Island, NY. After
graduation from ET school he spent 4 years at USCG Air Station Elizabeth
City, NC. In 1985 he reported to USCG Station Port Canaveral for his final 3
years of active duty as a First Class Electronic Technician.
He enlisted into the Reserve immediately after Active Duty in 1987. He served as Officer Of the Day at Station Port Canaveral until making Chief in January of 1990. Then he became a section leader for 20 reserves that augmented the station on First weekend. After integration of active and reserve he became the administrative Chief of the 60-person reserve section. As an ETCM he was transferred as a plankowner to Electronic Support Unit Miami and helped to facilitate the Reserves at all the Electronic Support Detachments within ESU Miami. He is a graduate of The Chief Petty Officer’s Academy and recipient of the Academic Excellence award from the Non Commissioned Officers Association.
MCPO Murphy’s awards include: Coast Guard Achievement Medal, Commandant’s Letter of Commendation Ribbon with one gold star, DOT Gold Medal for Outstanding Achievement Award, Coast Guard Unit Commendation with an “O” device and three gold stars, Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon with an “O” device and three gold star, Coast Guard Bicentennial Unit Commendation Ribbon, Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal with one bronze star, Coast Guard Reserve Good Conduct Medal with five bronze stars, National Defense Service Medal with one bronze star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Award, Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with silver Hourglass device, Coast Guard Rifleman Medal with “E” device, Coast Guard Pistol Medal with “S” device, and Department of Transportation “Find the Good and Praise It” award.
