What is Low Vision?

Touch Screen Program "What is Low Vision?" is an interactive program that is part of a new traveling exhibit that will be displayed in shopping malls across the United States. The exhibit and touch screen program are sponsored by the National Eye Institute (NEI), part of the Federal government's National Institutes of Health. It will provide information about low vision to the 14 million Americans with low vision, their families, and friends. Low vision is a visual impairment—not correctable by standard glasses, contact lenses, medicine, or surgery—that interferes with the ability to perform everyday activities. Designed to attract a cross section of the population from the young to senior citizens, an animated character was created to help guide the audience through the program. The program content is organized into three main menu items: 1) What is Low Vision?, 2) Do I have Low Vision?, 3) What can I do about Low Vision? The information is presented in an entertaining fashion and addresses issues such as what causes low vision. It also provides a self-assessment guide. Nine short videos are also included and demonstrate various low vision devices as well as personal accounts of people living with low vision.
