OCS Study MMS 2003-073
The Minerals Management Service (MMS), Gulf of Mexico OCS Region, announces the availability of a new study report, Proceedings: 22nd Annual Gulf of Mexico Information Transfer Meeting, January 2003.
This proceeding summarizes the presentations from the 22nd Information Transfer Meeting held January 14-16, 2003, in Kenner, Louisiana. Session topics included rig and reef ecology, explosive removal of offshore structures, air quality, physical oceanography, mapping and ground truthing, deepwater technology, Gulf of Mexico continental slope studies and surveys, sperm whales, Gulf of Mexico oil history project, coastal studies, socioeconomic issues, fates and effects of discharges, and biotechnology. Of particular interest are the preliminary results from field work conducted during the summer of 2002, which examined the movement of sperm whales in the Gulf of Mexico and included experiments with a seismic vessel. Several of the sessions discussed fauna associated with offshore structures, including the potential for future biotechnology. Visit the website at www.gomr.mms.gov for more information on MMS’s ongoing studies in the Gulf of Mexico Region.

MMS is the Federal agency in the U.S. Department of the Interior that manages the nation's oil, natural gas, and other mineral resources on the outer continental shelf in Federal offshore waters. The agency also collects, accounts for, and disburses mineral revenues from Federal and American Indian leases. These revenues totaled over $6 billion in 2002 and nearly $127 billion since the agency was created in 1982. Annually, nearly $1 billion from those revenues go into the Land and Water Conservation Fund for the acquisition and development of state and Federal park and recreation lands.
