Congressional Committee Prints: Search Tips

Sample Searches | Catalog of Available Documents | Identification Codes

Sample Searches (2)

The following sample searches are provided as guides to searching the Congressional Committee Prints. For the sake of space, only the top three hits in each results list are included with each example below.

1. Search by Subject

This type of search returns documents that are related to specific word(s) that you enter as your search term(s). They may appear anywhere within the document.

Query: “international relations”
Alternative: international ADJ relations
Results: [House Committee Print] A Ceremony
[Senate Committee Print] COMMITTEE ON INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
[House Committee Print] HEARING ON H.R. 4751, PUERTO RICO-UNITED STATES BILATERAL PACT OF NON- TERRITORIAL PERMANENT UNION AND GUARANTEED CITIZENSHIP ACT

Each document in the results list is accompanied by the chamber of Congress from which the committee print came and the size, which applies to the ASCII text file of that document. If another type of file, such as a PDF file, is available for the same document, it will typically be larger. In addition, the score is included, which is a relevancy indicator. Scores are out of 1000 points. Finally, the document will be offered in ASCII text, PDF, or both.

2. Search by Committee Print Number

This type of search returns documents that are related to specific committee print number that you enter as your search term. Only the Senate has a numbering system for its committee prints. Senate committee prints are numbered based on the Congress and order in which the print was released (e.g. "S. Prt. 108-3"). When searching by senate committee print number, do not include the phrase "S. Prt." in your query.

Query: “108-3”
Results: [Senate Committee Print] GUIDE FOR THE PREPARATION
