Lafourche Parish and Port Fourchon, Louisiana: Effects of the Outer Continental
Shelf Petroleum Industry on the Economy and Public Services, Part 1

OCS Study MMS 2001-019

The Minerals Management Service (MMS), Gulf of Mexico OCS Region, announces the availability of a new study report, Lafourche Parish and Port Fourchon, Louisiana: Effects of the Outer Continental Shelf Petroleum Industry on the Economy and Public Services, Part 1.

Recent developments in offshore deepwater oil and gas exploration and production in the Gulf of Mexico have brought economic benefits to Port Fourchon and Lafourche Parish. Increased economic activity is associated with the provision of onshore support for the offshore petroleum industry. The demands of this growth, however, have meant new challenges for the port and parish communities. The condition of the roads, the volume of traffic, and the current expansion of the water system reflect strains on the infrastructure. Given the influx of new people to meet workforce needs, municipal and parish officials also express concern over the stresses of traffic control, crime prevention, and law enforcement. Public school leaders stress their need for additional multilingual and multicultural teachers.

MMS is the federal agency in the U.S. Department of the Interior that manages the nation's oil, natural gas and other mineral resources on the outer continental shelf in federal offshore waters. The agency also collects, accounts for and disburses mineral revenues from federal and Indian leases. These collections totaled nearly $8 billion last year and more than $110 billion since the agency was created in 1982. Annually, nearly $1 billion from those revenues go into the Land and Water Conservation Fund for the acquisition and development of state and federal park and recreation lands.
