Founded in 1937, The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (SPI), is the trade association representing the fourth largest manufacturing industry in the United States. SPI’s 2,000 members represent the entire plastics industry supply chain, including processors, machinery and equipment manufacturers, and raw material suppliers. The U.S. plastics industry employs 1.3 million workers ad provides $274 billion in annual shipments.

The mission of SPI is to promote the continued development of the plastics industry and enhance public understanding of plastics’ contributions while meeting the needs of society. As the national trade association for the U.S. plastics industry, its strategy objectives are three-fold:

SPI represents and serves as the spokesperson for the industry locally, nationally and internationally, with emphasis on influencing public policy on issues of concern to the industry. SPI works to promote the accomplishments of the plastics industry, enhance its image and improve the business climate in which it operates. SPI promotes industry growth, competitiveness and the advancement of technology.

SPI accomplishes its objective through a variety of programs, including representing the industry before Federal and state government bodies, informing members about important legislative and regulatory policy developments, identifying trends and emerging issues of concern, building coalitions to help achieve industry goals, and communicating the value of the plastics industry and its products to key audiences.

SPI also serves as a resource for members needing technical expertise, statistical information, and regulatory compliance assistance. It maintains liaison with national and international technical and regulatory groups to develop standards for product performance and safety to protect existing markets for plastics and open new ones.

Through its national, international, and regional activities, SPI promotes industry growth and development through a variety of programs to improve company performance and create a positive business environment for the plastics industry.

SPI also sponsors two major trade shows, NPE and Plastics USA, providing a showcase for the industry and its products and an unparalleled forum for industry interaction.

In addition to SPI’s core services SPI’s business units and program committees serve the special needs of various industry segments. Some units are formed around specific materials, manufacturing processes and end markets, while others represent plastics machinery and equipment manufacturers or product manufacturers.

In addition to its Washington, DC headquarters, SPI operates regional offices in Woburn, MA, Chicago, IL, Irvine, CA, and Greenville, SC. SPI’s regions and state chapters serve member needs on a localized basis.

The SMA consists of 60 North American steel producers (including 50 U.S. companies, seven Canadian companies, and three Mexican companies), nine international steel companies, and 186 associate member companies. Most of the SMA’s members are electric arc furnace (EAF) steel producers, using a feedstock of virtually 100% iron and steel scrap to make new steel. Some enhance the scrap mix with alternative iron units. Several SMA members are reconstituted integrated steel producers, making steel from iron ore, coke, and scrap. In addition, the SMA includes several companies engaged exclusively in hot and/or cold rolling of raw steel products and splitting rail. SMA members are, by far, the largest recyclers in the U.S., consuming enormous tonnages of iron and steel scrap that would otherwise be landfilled. The nine international members located outside of North America include some of the largest steel companies in the world. Among the 186 associate members are several energy-related suppliers, as well as providers of equipment, supplies, and other services. The SMA has three main functions: (1) to develop and support public policy positions consistent with the interests of its members; (2) to provide a forum for the exchange of information on technical matters and operations among member companies; and (3) to serve as a source of information on the steel industry to suppliers, customers, and various government entities, including facilitating partnerships between government and industry for research on various technical issues.
