TRADE PERFORMANCE FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2008 AND THE PERIOD OF JANUARY-SEPTEMBER 2008# Malaysia’s trade continued to be strong in September 2008 reaching a value of RM110.09 billion, an increase of 13.7% from September 2007. Exports expanded by 15.1% from a year ago to RM62.31 billion, the second highest monthly export value ever recorded, while imports increased by 11.9% to RM47.78 billion. |

The Coincident Index (CI) rose to 124.4 points in August 2008 as compared to 123.6 points in July 2008. The increase of 0.7% in the current month was contributed by the positive change in total employment (0.8%) and real salaries & wages in manufacturing sector (0.3%). The six-month smoothed growth rate of CI recorded an increase of 1.6% in the current month.

Consumer Price Index (CPI) for January to September 2008 increased by 5.2 per cent to 110.9 compared with that of 105.4 in the same period last year. Compared with that of the same month in 2007, the CPI for September 2008 registered an increase of 8.2 per cent from 106.0 to 114.7 and when compared with the previous month, the CPI recorded a decrease by 0.2 per cent. |

1. PRODUCTION Production of natural rubber (NR) in August 2008 was recorded at 103,767 tonnes, an increase of 0.8% (778 tonnes) when compared with July 2008. Year-on-year, production recorded a decrease of 6.8%. The smallholding sector contributed 94.7% of total production while the estate sector, the remaining 5.3%. |

PERFORMANCE IN AUGUST, 2008
1. Sales Value
The sales value of the Manufacturing sector in August, 2008 continued to post a double-digit growth of 15.1% (RM6.8 billion) year-on-year, to record RM51.6 billion. The corresponding growth in July, 2008 was a revised 16.2%. Month-on-month, the sales value decreased RM1.4 billion or 2.7% as against RM53.1 billion reported in July, 2008.
