IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka travelled to Prague to give a keynote speech at Asia-Pacific Security Challenges Conference hosted by the Prague Security Studies Institute photo. Mr. Tanaka also met with Czech Vice-Minister of Industry and Trade, Mr. Tomas Huner.

IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka travelled to Brussels for the launch of "IEA Energy Policies Review: The European Union 2008". The report is the first IEA review of EU energy policies. EC Commissioner Andris Piebalgs joined Mr. Tanaka for the press conference. Mr. Tanaka also met with EU President José Manuel Barroso before the release of the report. All are pictured in the attached photo.

The Executive Director of the IEA Nobuo Tanaka met with India’s Petroleum Minister last Wednesday in New Delhi, and in his message asking India to eliminate subsidies he is quoted as saying “what is necessary is to have a policy to phase out price control and subsidies “. He also said to the media that India may well face, like the US, a slowdown in fuel demand due to high oil prices.

With regards to oil prices still above 100 USD the head of the IEA Oil Market Division David Fyfe commented on the decision by OPEC to cut output by 520 000 barrels per day. “Anything that removes supply from the system could be potentially difficult”, he said. Fyfe spoke of growing evidence that high prices in conjunction with weakening economic conditions are having “an impact on people’s lifestyle which could last”.
