Meeting Logistics

Date: August 13, 2001

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Place: Cohen Building Auditorium
330 Independence Ave., SW, Washington, DC

Entrance: All attendees must enter the building at the Independence Ave. entrance.

Metro: Federal Center SW (orange or blue lines). When exiting the metro, turn left and go two blocks to Independence Avenue. The entrance to the Cohen building will be on your left.

Parking: Public parking is limited

Pre-registration: You must register by close of business, August 6, 2001

Please provide your name, title, organization, address, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail address, and type or organization you represent. If you need special accommodations please inform the contact person when you register.

Oral and/or Written Comments

If, in addition to attending, you wish to make an oral presentation during the meeting, please submit with your registration the following:

  1. A brief written statement of the general nature of the views you wish to present, and
  2. The names and addresses of all persons who will participate in the presentation.

Depending upon the number of people who register to make oral presentations, FDA may have to limit the time allotted for each presentation (from 3 to 5 minutes)

Written comments should be submitted by October 29, 2001. You may do so by mail, e-mail, or on the web.

"Dear Colleague" Letter on August 13, 2001 Public Meeting
on the Labeling of Foods Containing Allergens

Dear Colleague:

This letter is to alert you that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will be holding a public meeting on August 13, 2001, in Washington, DC, to discuss the labeling of foods containing allergens and the inadvertent addition of allergens to foods due to processing practices. The purpose of the meeting is to stimulate discussion and to obtain information to assist FDA determine what additional actions may be necessary to provide consumers with adequate information on product labels. The meeting will focus on three areas: (1) source or plain English labeling; (2) supplemental labeling (e.g., "may contain" labeling); and (3) labeling of ingredients exempted from declaration (i.e., common or usual names of flavorings, spices, and colors; incidental additives). A Federal Register notice detailing the background for the meeting, specific issues, logistics, and registration information will be published shortly.
