300 Area Engineering Evaluation - Cost Analysis

PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD ON THE 300 AREA ENGINEERING EVALUATION/COST ANALYSIS.

The U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE), Washington Sate Department of Ecology, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have issued the Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA) #3 for the 300 Area for public review and comment. The 30-day public comment period will run from August 28 through September 29, 2006. The 300 Area was constructed and operated as a reactor fuel fabrication and laboratory complex. This EE/CA evaluates three removal action alternatives for the disposition of approximately 145 facilities (buildings and structures) primarily located in the southern portion of the 300 Area of the Hanford Site. USDOE has determined these facilities have no further use beyond the current mission. The potential threat of hazardous substances release in the facilities poses a substantial risk to human health and the environment. The three removal action evaluated were: No Action, Long-term Surveillance and Maintenance and Deactivation, Decontamination, Decommissioning and Demolition. The Tri-Party agencies selected Deactivation, Decontamination, Decommissioning and Demolition as the preferred alternative. Comments can be submitted through September 29 to: Rudy Guercia, U. S. Department of Energy, P.O. Box 550, A3-04, Richland, WA 99352, Fax: 509-373-0726, e-mail: Rudolph_F_Rudy_Guercia@rl.gov
At this time, no public meeting is scheduled. To request a meeting, please contact Rudy Guercia (509-376-5494) on or before September 8, 2006.
