Remote Sensing-Based Posters Available from the NOAA Coastal Services Center


A number of the remote sensing-based posters created by the Center are now available for downloading. A preview in JPEG format is provided by clicking on the posters below. The full poster is provided in Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) or Portable Document Format (PDF). The EPS files can be read and rescaled in many software packages to obtain the size of poster desired, while maintaining crisp text. For some posters, a Raster Transfer Language (RTL) version is provided for easier printing on DesignJet plotters.

Hurricane Emily

Hurricane Andrew

Hurricane Andrew swept over southern Florida in August 1992. This poster shows a relief image of Andrew on August 24, after the storm had passed over Florida and into the Gulf of Mexico.

Hurricane Hugo

Hurricane Hugo made landfall slightly north of Charleston, South Carolina, near midnight on September 21, 1989, as a Category 4 storm. This poster shows the satellite view of Hugo in the early afternoon of September 21.

Hurricane Opal

Hurricane Opal weakened from a Category 4 storm to a Category 3 before making landfall over the Florida Panhandle on October 4, 1995. Opal was still the fourth costliest hurricane in U.S. history with estimated damages of $3 billion. The dramatic effects Opal had on the coastal water clarity and temperature are depicted in this poster with a relief view of the hurricane.

Aftermath of Hurricane Georges

Hurricane Georges swept through the Caribbean and across the Florida Keys, and then dissipated on the U.S. Gulf coast in late September 1998. Power outages and coastal turbidity increases are shown. Two poster versions are available, one showing modeled wind fields and one without.

Airborne LIDAR Assessment of Coastal Erosion (ALACE) Project

These posters illustrate changes in beach topography from 1995 to 1996 and 1997 to 1998 on Assateague Island. The measurements were made using an airborne topographic mapper with a vertical accuracy of approximately 15 centimeters.

The first poster shows cross-sections of the LIDAR data compared to ground surveys, as well as maps of erosional change. Full size posters of the 95/96 erosion study in PDF format (3.7 megabytes) are available.

The second poster demonstrates the erosional effects of winter Nor'Easters on the dunes of Assateague Island. Full size posters of the 97/98 erosion study in EPS format (10.4 megabytes) are available.
