Component-Based Software for
Parallel Processing Systems

Torrent
Systems, Inc. investigated, developed, and tested portions of a prototype
of a parallel software development environment with co-funding from the
NIST Advanced Technology Program (ATP). Torrent subsequently incorporated
the technology into a product Orchestrate, which the company describes
as a "parallel application environment that insulates you from the
complexities of parallel programming while delivering scalable applications."
Users of the new technology no longer must pay attention to parallel programming
details for C/C++, permitting large savings in developing "industrial
strength" computer programs. Torrent has entered into strategic
partnerships with IBM, Sun, NCR, and a growing list of software vendors
to promote Orchestrate for applications where scalable computing is of
particular benefit, such as in managing massive databases. Orchestrate
has been licensed by several well-known companies such as United Airlines
and Citicorp. Torrent, which has grown from 2 employees at the
start of the project to over 30, believes that the technology would not
have been developed without the ATP.
