Food and Cosmetics Compliance Programs

Compliance programs are documents prepared by FDA's Centers that provide guidance to the Agency's field offices in carrying out investigations, inspections, sample collections, sample analyses, and regulatory activities in defined program areas, such as domestic seafood and pesticides in domestic foods for example. CFSAN's compliance programs are usually issued for 3-year periods and are continuing programs, that is they are renewed, updated, and re-issued after each 3-year period. Some programs, however, are re-issued more frequently due to changes in priorities, procedures, regulatory concerns, etc. Compliance programs differ from field assignments in that field assignments are typically more focused, short-term activities.

CFSAN presently has about 25 compliance programs and all will soon be available on the website. The programs appearing on this internet site are publicly releasable versions of the complete Compliance Program documents. They have been reviewed by CFSAN's Freedom of Information Office and information not releasable under current FOI regulations has been removed. FDA Field Staff should use the complete version available on the FDA Intranet.
