More Than 7 Million Jobs Created Since August 2003

Recently released new jobs figures show that 132,000 jobs were created in November. Since August 2003, more than 7 million jobs have been created – more jobs than all the other major industrialized countries combined. Our economy has now added jobs for 39 straight months, and the unemployment rate is 4.5 percent, down 0.5 percent from the same time last year.

Real wages have risen 2.8 percent over the past year. This means an extra $1,687 for the typical family of four with two wage earners. And, a USA Today/Gallup Poll estimated that consumers plan to spend more than $800 on gifts this season. The estimate is the "highest early November reading Gallup has seen since 2000," suggesting a "strong holiday season" for retailers.

Economic Development Today

Economic Development Today telecast, "Building Business on the Border," Aired December 13

The Economic Development Today telecast, "Building Business on the Border," was broadcast on December 13. The program highlighted leading regional strategies and innovation-led economic development that capitalizes on the assets of being located on the U.S.-Mexico border. The featured strategies serve as models for the many communities and regions that exist along this 2,000-mile border. The primary purpose of this bi-national enterprise is to promote and support scientific and technological collaboration between the U.S. and Mexico.

The telecast focused on the economic successes of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, as well as the many coalitions that have come together to support businesses on the border. Panelists included economic development practitioners, university experts, scientists, and elected officials. The telecast centered on public-private resources around business formation and expansion using applied technology research, technology/product development, advanced training, business planning, mentoring, incubation, business technology acceleration, and marketing.

Look for a telecast summary on the NARC website after January 1. At that time, the telecast also will be available to view online at the EDA website.

EDA is a long-standing partner with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on brownfields redevelopment. EDA was the first federal agency to enter into a partnership agreement with EPA to assist in brownfields revitalization activities nationwide.

EDA's goal in brownfields redevelopment is to create value by returning non-productive, blighted and/or formerly contaminated real estate to local tax roles while fostering capital investment and creating higher-skill, higher-wage jobs.

EDA Update is brought to you as a benefit of a partnership among the
