Overview of the March 3-4 winter storm and flooding
A wide variety of hazardous weather accompanied a strong storm Monday night and Tuesday. The storm tracked northeast across Tennessee on its way toward the eastern Great Lakes region.
- Along and southeast of the storm track, widespread heavy rainfall resulted in pockets of flooding. Storm total rainfall averaged from 2 to 4 inches in most of western Kentucky. A number of roads were under water, mainly in the typical problem areas. A few water rescues were conducted after vehicles plunged into overflowing creeks. No fatalities were reported.
- Several rivers are forecast to exceed flood stage in response to this heavy rain. Check the AHPS website for river information.
- Northwest of the storm track, colder air resulted in freezing rain and some sleet over parts of southeast Missouri and southern Illinois. The heaviest ice accumulations were from Perry County, Illinois southwest into parts of southeast Missouri. Power outages were reported in those areas. A narrow band of heavy snow on Tuesday affected the Ozark foothills of southeast Missouri. 12 inches of snow was reported about a mile north of the Carter County line. See accumulation graphic below.
- After a day of temperatures in the 70’s in many areas March 2, the return to winter cold was especially noticeable. Gusty northwest winds held temperatures steady in the 30’s Tuesday.
