Another ice storm on Feb. 21 lacked the punch of the first storm

After a crippling ice storm on Feb. 11, a less serious ice and sleet storm occurred on Feb. 21. Accumulations of ice on trees and power lines were generally less than one-half inch. Sleet accumulations ranged up to 2.5 inches in the Mount Vernon area of southern Illinois. Most places received less than an inch of sleet. Thundersleet and thunder with freezing rain occurred around Poplar Bluff. Refer to the graphic below for details.

At the onset of the freezing rain on Thursday morning, numerous accidents were reported. Interstate 24 in Christian County, KY was the scene of numerous accidents. Very hazardous road conditions continued through much of Thursday night across southern Illinois and southwest Indiana.
