ETL Receives the Prestigious Excellence in Aviation Award from the FAA

16th Dec, 2002

Contact: Timothy Schneider

The Environmental Technology Laboratory (ETL) is a co-recipient of the prestigious Excellence in Aviation Award -- 2002, from the by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for its contributions to the FAA's Aviation Weather Research Program. The award, which recognizes significant accomplishments as a result of aviation-related research efforts, was granted to ETL for its work on the remote detection of hazardous in-flight icing conditions in clouds

ETL's Ground-based Remote Icing Detection System (GRIDS) builds on ten years of theoretical, experimental, and engineering advances in remote sensing and systems integration. It uses measurements from a radar and a radiometer, along with weather analyses from the National Weather Service. The system will be deployed near large airports where icing hazards are frequent, providing pilots and air traffic controllers with accurate, real-time warnings of icing conditions. This technology will reduce winter-time flight delays and save lives and millions of dollars in property damage each year.
