Solar Telescope Studies Conducted at the BAO

January 31, 2004

Contact: Daniel Wolfe

The Boulder Atmospheric Observatory (BAO) is currently supporting a joint effort to compare boundary layer measurements from a solar telescope, fast-response in-situ sensors mounted on the tower and a Sodar. The collaborating agencies are NCAR's Atmospheric Technology Division (ATD) and High Altitude Observatory (HAO) and the National Solar Observatory (NSO). ATD provides state-of-the-art atmospheric observing systems and support services to the university-based research community for climate and weather research. The HAO studies the connections between the Sun and the Earth's atmosphere and physical environment, the physical processes which produce variable solar output, and the influence of these variations on the dynamics, chemistry and electrodynamics of Earth's middle and upper atmosphere and near space environment. The mission of the NSO is to advance knowledge of the Sun, both as an astronomical object and as the dominant external influence on Earth, by providing forefront observational opportunities to the research community. The NSO is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy under a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation, for the benefit of the astronomical community. This inter-comparison will end January 31st and will help in choosing the location for a NSO solar telescope based on atmospheric factors.
