Engineer Elected to Lead IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society
November 24, 2003
Contact: Al Gasiewski
The Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) of the Institute of
Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has elected Dr.
Albin J. Gasiewski, Chief, Microwave Systems Development Division,
Environmental Technology Laboratory, to be its next president.
Many of NOAA's scientific and technical accomplishments in the area
of satellite- and aircraft-based weather, climate, and environmental
observation are disseminated through GRSS publications and symposia.
The GRSS is an international body of scientists and engineers engaged
in the development and application of remote sensing technology,
including satellite, airborne, shipborne, and ground-based remote sensing.
The GRSS has approximately 2500 members representing 71 countries. The
Society organizes the annual International Geoscience and Remote Sensing
Sympsium (IGARRS), and publishes through its two archival technical
journals (the Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing and
Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters), and its GRSS Newsletter.
The IEEE is the largest professional organization, with over 367,000
members worldwide.
Dr. Gasiewski has been a member of the GRS-S and IEEE since 1981, and
is co-organizing the 2006 IGARSS, to be held in Denver, Colorado.
In 2002 he was elected as an IEEE Fellow. His citation read, "For
contributions to passive microwave sounding within clouds and
precipitation, and passive polarimetric microwave imaging."
Dr. Gasiewski's term as GRSS president is set to begin on January 1, 2004.
