Public and Private Laws: Search

GPO Access contains all laws enacted from the 104th Congress (1995-1996) forward. In addition to searching, a browseable Catalog of Public and Private Laws is also available. This application is prepared and published by the Office of the Federal Register (OFR), National Archives and Records Administration.

Beginning with the 110th Congress, the Public and Private Laws on GPO Access have been digitally signed and certified. GPO has signed and certified the PDF files to assure users that the online documents are official and authentic. More on GPO’s Authentication Initiative.

The digitally signed PDF files should be viewed using Adobe Acrobat or Reader version 7.0 or 8.0. Download the most recent version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

(ex: "public law 108-3", "117 stat 7", "42 usc 4001")

[ Search Tips ]
  • To search by public law number, enter (in quotes) the phrase public law and the number. For example, "public law 107-1". Do NOT enter "public law 107-001".
  • To narrow a search, use the Boolean operators ADJ (adjacent), AND, OR and NOT. For example: "district of columbia" AND expenses.
  • To find variations on words, truncation can be used. For example: legislat* will retrieve both legislation and legislative.
