2002 AHS Metro Survey

This document provides a brief introduction to the 2002 Metropolitan Survey dataset of the American Housing Survey.

  • Click here to download the 2002 data in SAS Xport Format. The file is a self-extracting (*.exe, 13,873 KB) file, which expands to just over 97 meg. Updated 7/10/03.
  • Click here to download the 2002 metro data in ASCII format. The file is a self-extracting (*.exe, 23,157 KB) file that is a little over 23 meg in size, and expands to 8 files of size just over 291 meg. The data are in comma-delimited format. The first record in each file is a comma-delimited list of the variable names, in order. Updated 7/10/03.
  • Click here to download the SAS “file flattener” program which will convert the SAS data to a single file format in SAS. This program is customized for the 2002 Metro data. The size of the file is a little more than 7 KB. Updated on 7/10/03.
  • HUD income limits (updated on 5/3/07) (*.exe, 327 KB). This file contains estimates of Fair Market Rents (FMRs), income limits, area median incomes, and poverty levels for the records in the public use microdata of the American Housing Survey metropolitan sample for 2002. The data in this file can be matched with the AHS 2002 national file by using the CONTROL and SMSA variables. The data are in comma delimited ASCII format.
  • Click here to download the descriptive statistics (*.exe, 928 KB). This archive contains descriptive statistics by metro area (SMSA) for the 2002 American Housing Survey Metropolitan Sample (07/10/2003 release). These are intended to help analysts verify that they have set up the microdata files correctly. Statistics are provided for both the 8-file format distributed by HUD and the file produced by the "file flattener" utility. Descriptive statistics (minimum, mean, maximum, and sum) are provided in weighted and unweighed forms, by SMSA, for all numeric variables. Frequency distributions are provided for all character variables (not by SMSA).Updated on 7/14/2003.
      The files are:
    • 2002 8-file Contents.txt
    • 2002 8-file unweighted descriptives.txt
    • 2002 8-file unweighted frequencies.txt
    • 2002 8-file weighted descriptives.txt
    • 2002 8-file weighted frequencies.txt
    • 2002 flat file contents and means.doc
    • 2002 flatfile unweighted frequencies.txt
    • 2002 flatfile weighted frequencies.txt
    • README.TXT

  • Click here to download the computer script (*.exe, 286 KB) that embodied the survey instrument (The Q Code). Updated on 7/14/2003.
  • Click here to download Census Bureau's table specifications (*.exe, 78 KB) for its reports. Updated on 7/14/2003.

  • Click here to download alltabs files(*.exe, 905 KB). The alltabs files are Tables which are an attempt to replicate the information in the published reports using the public data. They are a byproduct of the quality control that is performed as part of the data processing. They will be close, although not always exact to the published reports. Minor differences may appear due to changes in the data due to data confidentiality and also minor differences in definitions. The alltabs files are provided to act as a point of comparison for users trying to replicate the printed reports. The table specifications used to generate the tables can be requested from HUD Updated on 7/15/2003.
  • AHS 2002 Value Labels File (revised 01/16/04). This file adds value labels to the character variables in the SAS version of the 2002 AHS dataset. (*.zip, 36 KB).
