Professor Ryan Hayward Wins NSF CAREER Grant

Assistant Professor Ryan Hayward has received a five-year, $475,000 CAREER grant from the National Science Foundation to conduct research on surface instabilities in hydrogels, which are important for the design of biomaterials and "smart" surfaces. The grant will also support educational and outreach activities both at UMass and in cooperation with the Boston Museum of Science. CAREER grants are awarded to support the early career development activities of those teacher-scholars who most effectively integrate research and teaching. Read more: In the loop.

 

Professor Tom Russell Elected to the National Academy of Engineering

On February 8, 2008, the National Academy of Engineering announced the election of 65 new members as well as 9 foreign associates. According to the NAE Release statement, "Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature," and to the "pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education."

Professor Al Crobsy to Receive Young Adhesion Scientist Award.

At the upcoming Adhesion Society meeting, Professor Al Crosby will be honored with the Adhesion Society’s Young Adhesion Scientist Award.  This is the first time this award will be given.  The purpose of the Young Adhesion Scientist Award is to recognize a young scientist or engineer for conducting outstanding and fundamental research in adhesion science.
