Thousands of communities across the nation are forming partnerships and exploring ways to manage and improve their watersheds. In their efforts, these communities have unearthed a substantial need for support in the areas of technical and financial assistance. Although federal programs rarely provide the primary source of funding for local watershed management activities, they do provide a significant impetus for progress and a source of added incentives for individual involvement.

This document provides information on 21 major sources of monetary and on-site technical assistance offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to support local-level watershed management efforts. While the USDA does offer many other programs to provide assistance to private agricultural landowners, this catalog describes only those programs that promote environmental improvement and/or protection.

The main index cross-references all the program entries by Resource Issue categories-Soil, Water, Air, and Fish and Wildlife. Following the index is the core of the compendium-an alphabetical listing of the programs with information on their purpose, scope, and priorities. Additionally, each program description identifies the type of assistance provided, who is eligible to apply for it, and a summary of the application procedures.

Appendices include lists of state contacts for the major USDA administering agencies (Natural Resources Conservation Service, Farm Service Agency, Rural Utilities Service) and regional contacts for the U.S. Forest Service and National Association of Conservation Districts. Each of these agencies and organizations also supports field or district offices that operate closest to the county level. Due to the large number of these offices, individual listings in this document were not possible.
