Intermountain Health Care (IHC) is a community-owned, nonprofit healthcare organization operating in Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming with 23 hospitals, numerous outlying clinics and facilities, and more than 400 physicians. IHC has placed an emphasis on integrating clinical data to make the quality of care within the network uniform and has a well-developed IT infrastructure that includes the legacy HELP (Health Evaluation through Logical Processing) system -an expert system that conducts evaluations and provides recommendations on the care of each patient. The EMR system has demonstrated cost savings in the area of disease management (that enable the provider to intervene earlier and use preventive health services) as well as through lower paper-handling and transcription costs and higher staff productivity.
