As Senior Advisor, National Health Information Infrastructure (NHII), Department of Health and Human Services, Dr. Yasnoff is responsible for providing Federal leadership and coordination in support of the development and implementation of NHII as well as expert advice and assistance on a variety other medical informatics and health information technology issues.
He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Biomedical Informatics, co-editor of the recently published textbook “Public Health Informatics and Information Systems, and a member of the Board of Directors of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). In 2001, he served as Program Chair of the AMIA Spring meeting, “Developing a National Agenda for Public Health Informatics.” Most recently, Dr. Yasnoff was involved in the creation and initial activities of the Public Health Informatics Institute, a non-profit organization funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation dedicated to improved coordination and sharing in the development and dissemination of information systems by public health agencies.
Prior
to that, he served as Associate Director for Science, Public Health Practice
Program Office (PHPPO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from
1997-2002, with responsibility for the scientific direction and oversight of PHPPO’s efforts to strengthen the practice of public health
through information networks, distance learning, performance standards,
laboratory quality assurance, and prevention research. He represented CDC on the National Committee
on Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS) Subcommittee on Standards and Security
and both the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials and National
Association of County and City Health Officials IT committees. Before joining CDC, Dr. Yasnoff served as
Director of Oregon’s immunization registry and INPHO (Information Network for
Public Health Officials) project.
He
received both his Ph.D. in computer science and M.D. from Northwestern
University, and is the author of over 150 scientific publications and
presentations. He has been a Fellow of
the American College of Medical Informatics since 1989.
