Direct Application of GIS

• Provider network adequacy (pharmacies, dentists, and physicians) to focus Medicaid recruitment efforts
• CHC coverage adequacy to determine future expansion sites
• Portrayal of Medicaid participation allows CHC's to describe need

This slide shows a map of the Medicaid Pharmacy Providers in Coos County, New Hampshire in June 2003 by chain and independent pharmacy. The map shows the location of four Rite Aids, Groveton Pharmacy, The Sullivan Drug Store, and Walmart.

The data is from County Populations from NH OSP 2002 County Estimates, Medicaid Member Counts from ORA Medicaid Members 2003_05.xls, NH DHHS Office of Health Planning and Medicaid, 8/28/03. Coos County=14 percent, Grafton=8 percent, Carroll=10 percent, Sullivan=11 percent, Belknap=9 percent, Merrimack=7 percent, Strafford=8 percent, Cheshire=8 percent, Hillsborough=7 percent, and Rockingham=5 percent.

Direct Application of Emergency Department (ED) Data

• Examine Medicaid - funded ED visits, then compare Medicaid versus non-Medicaid ED use.
  • What time of day does the greatest ED use occur?
  • Do Medicaid patients use the ED more frequently for common illnesses?
• Utilize the ED algorithm developed by NYU to further analyze NH Medicaid data.
  • Have other states used the ED algorithm with their Medicaid data?

• To identify gaps in services and geographic patterns for access to medical care.
  • ED data (Medicaid claims data)
  • GIS mappings
• Goal: target efforts to enroll Medicaid providers which will aid in network development/maintenance.
