Power Supply Upgrade
Background
In order to meet a growing power demand, Elizabethton Electric Department plans to upgrade its Milligan College Substation. TVA will install a loop in the Jonesborough-Sullivan 161-kV transmission line and build 1.5 miles of transmission line on existing right-of-way to power the substation.
The Milligan College 69-kilovolt Substation is located on the south side of Old Milligan Highway in Carter County, Tennessee. Currently, the substation is powered by a line from the south.
Following the upgrade to 161-kilovolts, the substation will be powered by a new double-circuit 161-kV line from the north. The transmission line will be built on existing right-of-way. The de-energized 69-kV line (the Northeast Johnson City-Milligan College 69-kV line) on the right-of-way will be torn down and the 1.5 mile long double-circuit line will be built in its place.
The right-of-way easement is 100 feet wide and the 1.5-mile section where the new line will be built affects 19 property tracts.
The line is scheduled to be in service in summer 2010.
By continuing to provide affordable, reliable power, TVA and the distributors of TVA power will help ensure continued economic health and growth in the area.
