Power Supply Upgrade

Update February 2007

TVA has evaluated a network of 17 alternative route segments for the new Reese Ferry 161-kilovolt line using the same environmental, land-use, engineering, and cost considerations for each alternative. The reviews were based on available data, aerial photography, limited onsite reviews, public review and comment, and property owner input.

Based on these evaluations, TVA has identified a 5-mile route consisting of alternative route segments (from west to east) 12, 10, 5, 2 and 1. This route is expected to have the least overall project impacts of the alternatives.

The new line will extend from TVA’s existing Widows Creek Fossil-Winchester 161-kilovolt line, located west of Bridgeport, Alabama. The line will head east-northeast to an industrial site located northeast of downtown Bridgeport.

The line would be on steel poles on a 100-foot right-of-way.

TVA is contacting property owners along the preferred transmission line route.

Background

image of transmission lineA new transmission line is needed to maintain reliable electric service, meet growing demand and avoid possible power supply disruptions to industrial areas of Bridgeport, Alabama.

TVA serves several large industries from an older, long, radial line that is at risk of lengthy power interruptions. In an effort to provide for the growing electrical needs of the area, TVA plans to build a new 161-kilovolt transmission line to the area.

The project is scheduled to be completed spring of 2009.

By continuing to provide affordable, reliable power, TVA and distributors of TVA power will help ensure continued economic health and growth in the area.

Public involvement

TVA’s process for siting new transmission projects is designed to allow public input at all stages. TVA is committed to working with area stakeholders to address concerns during the course of the project.

TVA held an open house to discuss the proposed transmission line project on November 16, 2006. Comments received during the comment period were used to help determine the preferred route for the transmission line.
