August 2008 Weather Summary for Dodge City

Precipitation for August 2008 was well below normal for the Dodge City Regional Airport.  The total was 1.89 inches and that was 0.84 inches below normal.  This is also one of the driest summers on record for Dodge City with a total of 4.59 inches for June, July and August, which is the 16th driest on record.  Records for those months date back to 1875.  The last time it was this dry during the summer was 2001 when there was only 3.43 inches of rain.  The driest summer on record was 1976 with a total of 2.23 inches.  The highest 24 hour precipitation total for August 2008 was 0.80 inches on the 25th.  The total precipitation from January 1st to August 31st was 11.06 inches, which was 6.36 inches below normal.

The average temperature for August 2008 was 77.7 degrees, which was 0.5 degrees below normal.  The average high temperature was 89.7 degrees and the average low was 65.6 degrees.  The highest temperature was 108 degrees on the 4th and the lowest was 58 degrees on the 16th.  The 108 degree reading was a record high for that date.  A record lowest maximum temperature was set on the 17th with a high of only 71 degrees.  The day before saw a high of 71 degrees also, which tied the lowest maximum temperature for that date. 

The average wind speed was 11.2 mph.  The highest wind gust was 40 mph from the west and occurred on the 14th.  The amount of sunshine for the month was 62 percent.
