- MPEG: All the animations are best viewed at about 6-10 frames per second, but since the MPEG format only supports "video" rates (24fps, 30fps, etc.), they will play back much too fast on a sufficiently powerful machine. Therefore, it is up to the player program to provide frame-rate control.
- UNIX: The original Berkeley MPEG player (mpeg_play) should play all these MPEGs correctly. It runs under nearly all UNIX variants (including Linux) and it supports adjustable frame rate control.
- Windows: The default Windows Media Player may not be able to play these MPEGs at all due to their "non-standard" sizes. The newest version (freely downloadable from Microsoft) should play them, but it may exhibit occasional graphical glitches and it doesn't provide frame-rate control. One alternative which does provide frame-rate control and seems to play these MPEGs correctly is an older Windows 3.1 program called VMPEG.
- Macintosh: Apple's QuickTime player does have MPEG support, however, there is no frame-rate control. It also seems to play these MPEGs with an inconsistent frame rate. An alternative is a program called Sparkle which does does provide frame-rate control. However, it too seems to play these MPEGs with a slightly inconsistent frame rate.
- QuickTime: These animations are created using the "Apple Animation (RLE)" codec.
- UNIX: The XAnim program will play these QuickTimes. It runs under nearly all UNIX variants including Linux.
- Windows: The Windows Media Player doesn't support the codec used in these QuickTimes. However, the MoviePlayer which is part of Apple's QuickTime package for Windows (freely downloadable from Apple) will play them.
- Macintosh: Apple's QuickTime player will play them.
- AVI: Many of these animations are created using the "Indeo5" codec from Ligos (formerly from Intel).
- UNIX: Recent versions of the XAnim program will correctly play these AVIs.
- Windows: The default Windows Media Player may not support the Indeo5 codec. If that is the case then just download it from Ligos.
- Macintosh: An extension for use with Apple's QuickTime provides support for playing these. This extension is available separately from Apple. Unfortunately, there is no OS X native version.
-
FLC:
- UNIX: The XAnim program will play these FLCs.
- Windows: A good FLC player for Windows is PowerFliC. Apple's QuickTime for Windows will play them as well.
- Macintosh: Apple's QuickTime player will play them.
