Highlights

  • In 2000, 18 States submitted discharge records for substance abuse treatment admissions to SAMHSA's Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS). These States were: California, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Utah, and Wyoming.
  • In SAMHSA's Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS) linked admission/ discharge records, 16 percent represented clients who received intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment. Intensive outpatient treatment is defined as treatment that lasts at least two or more hours per day for three or more days per week. It does not include regular outpatient treatment or outpatient detoxification.
  • The completion rate for intensive outpatient treatment was higher (41%) than for all outpatient treatment (34%).
  • The median length of stay for completed intensive outpatient treatment was shorter than for all completed outpatient treatment episodes. The median for completed intensive outpatient care was 49 days while for all completed outpatient episodes it was 91 days.
