Highlights:

• Of the 13,843 facilities responding to SAMHSA's 2002 National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS), 7 percent served primarily clients younger than 18 years of age.

• Substance abuse treatment facilities with 75% or more of their clients under age 18 were characterized as "adolescent facilities."  Adolescent facilities were more likely than adult facilities to be operated by private non-profit organizations.

• Adolescent facilities were more likely than adult facilities to offer special programs for clients with co-occurring substance abuse and psychological problems.

• In adolescent facilities, 73% of clients were treated for both alcohol and drug abuse problems, whereas about 55% of clients in adult facilities were treated for both problems.

• Only 8% of the clients in adolescent facilities were treated for alcohol abuse alone compared with 22% in adult facilities.

This Short Report,  The DASIS Report: Facilities Primarily Serving Adolescents: 2002, is based on the Drug and Alcohol Services Information System (DASIS), the primary source of national data on substance abuse treatment.  DASIS is conducted by SAMHSA's Office of Applied Studies (OAS) in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
