Highlights:

From 1990 to 1998, the annual number of new cigar users climbed steadily from almost 2 million in 1990 to nearly 5 million in 1998. Between 1998 and 1999, however, the number of new cigar users decreased 22 percent.

In 2000, current cigar use was higher among young adults aged 18 to 25 than among youth or adults age 26 and older.

More than half of current cigar users also smoked cigarettes during the past month.

This Short Report, The NHSDA Report: Cigar Use, is based on SAMHSA's National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA), now called the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). The survey is conducted by the Office of Applied Studies (OAS) in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) is the primary source of information on the prevalence, patterns, and consequences of drug and alcohol use and abuse and for selected mental health measures in the general U.S. civilian non institutionalized population, age 12 and older. SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use & Health also provides estimates for drug use and for selected mental health measures by State.
