Are the benefit estimates on my Social Security Statement accurate for government workers?
  Question
I heard that the benefit estimates for government workers and nonprofit organizations and for people who work outside the United States might not be correct on these Statements. Why is that?
  Answer

Some employees of federal, state and local government agencies and nonprofit organizations and some individuals who have worked in other countries may be eligible for pensions that are based on earnings not covered by Social Security.

Because of a law known as the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP), this can affect the amount of your Social Security monthly benefits. Social Security does not know whether you are eligible for such a pension, so we cannot automatically adjust the estimates on your Statement. If you have had this kind of work, see our fact sheet, Windfall Elimination Provision, to find out whether you might be affected.

Or see our Online WEP Calculator.
