Co-leads: Alice M. Horowitz and
Stuart Lockwood Several issues were raised and
discussed during the oral health breakout session. These included:
- Concern was voiced about the lack of minorities enrolled in
dental [and medical] schools and how this factor likely relates to lack of access for
minorities. This issue was discussed in the context of disparities in the lack of access
to dental care.
- Another issue had to do with the dental sealant objective
and whether as it is written it is realistic considering that the same objective for 2000
has not been met.
- Another concern dealt with the need for a rewrite of the
background material contained in the chapter. Participants were reminded that the material
would be completely rewritten and more recent references would be included. Discussion
also was held on the process of finalizing the objective.
- Concern was expressed about the objective calling for oral
examinations on persons entering long-term care facilities both in terms of who would be
performing the examinations and the value of the exam considering that no followup is
required when exams are conducted.
- The lack of dental public health infrastructure in states
also was discussed. The need for oral health infrastructure in the form of an objective(s)
in the infrastructure chapter was expressed.
