How to Submit MaterialPreventing Chronic Disease (PCD) has established a special section for the exchange of information on chronic-disease–related planning and response in times of disaster. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and other recent events have demonstrated that a lack or an insufficient supply of medically related needs, such as daily medications, home oxygen canisters, chemotherapy, nutritional requirements, and other life supports, may cause severe deterioration of chronic disease conditions. Pregnant women, people with mental illness, the frail elderly, and people with disabilities are populations whose health often is most affected by major disasters. We anticipate that PCD will host Chronic Disease in Times of Disaster for 4 to 6 months and will then convert it into an easily accessible archive. It is not our intention to duplicate reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, other public health agencies, or other groups providing information on disaster planning and relief; rather, our goal is to supplement and support these efforts for the benefit of our readers. We hope this information is useful to everyone as we promote public communication about chronic disease in times of disaster. As Chronic Disease in Times of Disaster grows, we want to hear from you about its usefulness and success. We invite our readers to provide submissions to this section. The emphasis should be on practical information that is 1) of immediate use to other readers or 2) of use in developing future recommendations for predisaster planning or on-site operations. How to submit materialWe are interested in the following types of content:
All materials should include complete author names, including affiliations and academic designations; contact information, including telephone numbers and e-mail addresses; properly formatted references; and other relevant information. Manuscripts for peer review are best submitted for a regular PCD issue. If appropriate, we will establish a link between the article and Chronic Disease in Times of Disaster. We do not require formal structures for these reports, because our goal is to encourage rapid information sharing. Please keep the material as brief as possible, preferably 1500 words or fewer, and submit it through PCD Manuscript Central*. All reports may be submitted as letters to the editor, but please explain in the comment section that your manuscript is for Chronic Disease in Times of Disaster and specify how you would like it to be characterized. PublicationMaterial for Chronic Disease in Times of Disaster will be posted on the Web site independent of the regular PCD issue publication dates and, in most cases, will be posted within a few days of receipt and acceptance. PCD will publish a table of contents with links to each document and the date each article is published online. We will also include reminders of the special section in “Announcements” on the PCD home page. We send e-mail announcements with a table of contents to our regular PCD subscribers when each issue is published. We may also send e-mails announcing updates to the special section. *URLs for nonfederal organizations are provided solely as a service to our users.
