NOAA Ship RESEARCHER.

Twin diesel, length 278.3 feet, beam 51 feet, draft 18.3 feet. Built by American Shipbuilding at Toledo, Ohio, in 1968. In service 1970- 1987 as RESEARCHER, renamed NOAA Ship MALCOLM BALDRIGE after Secretary of Commerce MALCOLM BALDRIGE who died as the result of an accident in 1987. Decommissioned in 1996. The RESEARCHER was an all-purpose oceanographic ship that served the Nation in all oceans conducting oceanographic and atmospheric research. It was the second NOAA vessel to circumnavigate the Earth, leaving in February 1995 from Miami, Florida, sailing through the South Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Pacific, and thence back through the Panama Canal to Norfolk, Virginia, in early 1996.
