The Coast and Geodetic Survey Ship HYDROGRAPHER

Steamer, length 164.9 feet, beam 31.5 feet, draft 14.3 feet. The HYDROGRAPHER was the second oil burning steamer built for the Coast and Geodetic Survey. Built in 1930 at Spear Engineering and Navy Yard, Norfolk, Virginia. In service 1931 -1967, primarily Atlantic service. Transferred to Navy 1942-1946 and designated AGS 2. The HYDROGRAPHER conducted surveys in Massacre Bay, Attu, Aleutian Islands, during the retaking of Attu in 1943. The HYDROGRAPHER also conducted surveys at Guam during amphibious operations and conducted surveys at many other locations throughout the Pacific Theater of Operations. Following the war, the HYDROGRAPHER returned to C&GS service and spent most of the remainder of its career working on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts.
