DISCOVERER

discoverer (circa 1935)
Coast and Geodetic Survey Ship DISCOVERER in Alaskan waters.

Steam, length 180 feet, beam 35.6 feet, draft 12.6 feet. Built at Todd Shipyards, New York, for $500,000 in 1918. Former WWI minesweeper, the USS AUK AM-38 in1922. Returned to Navy in 1941 as ARS-3. Known as one of the “bird boats.” Commemorated by Discoverer Bay, Kodiak Island, Alaska, and Discoverer Island, a small island in that bay.
