Steamer,
length 153.2 feet , beam 26.2 feet, draft 15 feet. Built by Harlan
and Hollingsworth, Wilmington, Delaware in 1871. Sail and steam. In
service 1871-1902. Primarily Atlantic service. Did first offshore
dredging work for Fish Commission
in 1872 and subsequently used in many cooperative projects with the
Fish Commission. Named for Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867), second
Superintendent of the Coast Survey, at various times served as President
of the American Association for Advancement of Science and President
of American Philosophical Society; an incorporator and regent of the
Smithsonian Institution; a founder and first President of the National
Academy of Sciences; Vice President of the American Sanitary Commission,
a forerunner of the American Red Cross, during the Civil War; and
recipient of many awards from foreign governments and scientific societies
for his guidance of the Coast Survey.
