Brief Description: South Beach Civic CERT is located in a beach community on the Staten Island side of the New York Verrazano Narrows Bridge. In the earlier part of the year they received their training from the NYC Office of Emergency Management and graduated 16 new CERT members. In July, 2004 the training was supplemented by a FEMA CERT Train-The-Trainer who graduated 40 more new CERT members. The same trainer, Peter A. Morici also trained the Battery Park City CERT, Brooklyn South CERT, Gateway Cathedral CERT, Port Richmond CERT, Castlketon CERT and New York FEMA 1 CERT Units. South Beach Civic CERT was started by Joe and Roe McAllister when they saw a need to have a CERT unit in Staten Island. In the fall of this year it is anticpated that there will be 40-50 new community members attending the CERT course and we anticipate to grow in 2005. On August 14, 2004 both the Battery Park City CERT and the South Beach Civic CERT units participated in a Disaster Drill in Battery Park City. The simulation was a terrorist attack using explosives followed up by a secondary device. Both teams performed according to the FEMA trainer, evaluators and NYC OEM observers, better than expected. What makes these two CERT teams "unique", is that both CERT teams will be working together in the event of any natural, manmade or terrorist acts. The Staten Island Ferry closely connects these two units on the waterways. For all interested community members wanting to join the South Beach Civic CERT unit, please contact: THE New York City Office of Emergency Management or Peter A. Morici at 1-347-408-5345 CERTMASTERUSA@AOL.COM.

Brief Description: The mission of our program is to train community members and community organizations in the greater New York area in FEMAs Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) concept. Our training follows all the steps and concepts taught by FEMA through their CERT Train-The-Trainer course that our Master Instructors have been certified in. Our mission also incorporates in training corporate employees in the event of a disaster in the workplace. Our ongoing accomplishments have been the creation of the First FEMA CERT Team in New York City, the Battery Park City CERT opposite Ground Zero. The Commissioner of the NYC OEM, John Odermatt was present for the first graduation in November, 2003 of 63 members of the First Team. This organization works with the NYC Office of Emergency Management in achieving their objectives and ours as well. We have also trained and created the following CERT Units in New York City, South Beach Civic CERT in Staten Island, NY, the Gateway Cathedral CERT Unit in Staten Island, N.Y and the Brooklyn South CERT Unit in Brooklyn, N.Y. Several more community organizations and businesses are presently waiting training. The uniqueness of our training program, unlike most others, is that once we create these teams we are still there ensuring that these teams practice weekly with disaster simulations, hands on medical, fire suppression, hazards materials and cribbing and leveraging. We also interface two or more teams to work together when we have their semi-annual major disaster drill and simulations. We are the first to incorporate a CERT data base linking all our FEMA trained CERT teams. In the event of a natural, man-made disaster or terrorist attack during the daytime when most members are working in Manhattan or one of the other boroughs and disaster strikes and they are unable to get to their teams staging areas, they know the staging area of the nearest FEMA CERT team and report directly there.

Brief Description: On June 16, 2004 County Executive Maggie Brooks held a news conference to announce Monroe County's CERT Program. She emphasized that, "Emergency response is not a spectator sport," and solicited public participation in emergency preparedness training. The County CERT Program is actively engaging citizens in its classes designed to: - attract people who want a comprehensive, 24-hour training that includes a practical application of skills to help better protect themselves, their family and their neighbors during the first seventy-two hours of an emergency - recognize CERT as a training standard, i.e. CERT becomes a pre-requisite course for a menu of additional educational opportunities designed as "CERT, Phase II" - solicit sponsors of CERT classes with the express purpose of organizing the class graduates in a Team that will be available for emergency activation within the local community - adapt to defined populations, e.g. a specific workforce to increase employee awareness and preparedness, and to have a Team presence in their workplace - adapt to special populations, e.g. our community has a large deaf and hard of hearing community, and the CERT curriculum is available to them since January 2005 The Program collaborates with two other CERT vendors in the community to integrate an instructor pool, to set equipment standards, and to schedule training exercises that coordinate a unified CERT response to community-wide emergencies. The County Program has an aggressive approach in its outreach to the community, and our program strives to be responsive to community needs for trained volunteers. CERT Team sponsors include local government, faith-based organizations, and employers. Local initiatives include volunteer referrals to other volunteer agencies, like the American Red Cross, and the Medical Reserve Corps. And, we are documenting CERT graduates who pursue additional volunteer activities within our community. Our CERT Program continues to pay dividends for these volunteers and those they serve.
