WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced that Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS), LLC has been selected as the management and operating contractor for DOE’s Savannah River Site (SRS) in Aiken, South Carolina.  The contract is a cost-plus award-fee contract valued at approximately $800 million per year and is for a five-year base period with the option to extend it for up to five additional years.

SRNS is a limited liability corporation consisting of Fluor Federal Services, Inc., Honeywell International, Inc., and Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company (a Northrop Grumman Company).  The team also includes subcontractors Lockheed Martin Services, Inc. and Nuclear Fuel Services, Inc.

The SRS management and operating contract includes three key mission areas:  environmental cleanup, operation of the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL), and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) activities.  Environmental cleanup activities include management of spent nuclear fuel, nuclear materials, and non high-level radioactive waste; deactivation and decommissioning of excess facilities; and remediation of soil and groundwater.  In support of the DOE national security and non-proliferation programs, the NNSA activities include operation of the tritium facilities, completion of the plutonium disposition program, and disposition of highly enriched uranium.  The contract includes operation of SRNL, one of DOE’s world class national laboratories, which supports departmental environmental cleanup, energy security, and national security missions.   The contractor also will manage pensions and benefits and SRS infrastructure.

The transition period of the new contractor will begin on January 24, 2008 and will be completed in 90 days.  SRNS will assume management and operation of the Savannah River Site under the new contract in April 2008.  The base period of the contract is from January 2008 through December 2012 with a five-year option from January 2013 through December 2017.

The SRS management and operating contract is the first to be awarded as part of DOE’s innovative contracting strategy for the Savannah River site.  This strategy will increase the number of prime contracts on the site as the Department focuses on continuing cleanup momentum and accomplishing specific mission critical activities.

The Savannah River Site is a key DOE industrial complex, focusing on the cleanup of legacy materials and wastes left from the Cold War.  It comprises 310 square miles in Aiken, Allendale, and Barnwell Counties, South Carolina.  Constructed during the 1950s to produce basic materials used in the fabrication of nuclear weapons in support of our nation’s defense programs, SRS is recognized for performance and excellence in support of our national security and as a responsible steward of the environment.  Learn more about the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management and the Savannah River Site.
