Producer Price Index Introduced for Amusement and Theme Parks — NAICS 713110

To expand coverage of the service sector in the Producer Price Index (PPI), the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) introduced a new price index for amusement and theme parks—North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) 713110—in July 2006. Data for this index appear in table 5 of the PPI Detailed Report and are available online through the BLS website.

This industry is part of the subsector for amusement, gambling, and recreation industries—NAICS 713. In this subsector, businesses may operate facilities at which patrons primarily engage in sports, recreation, amusement, or gambling activities. Alternatively, businesses in this subsector may provide other amusement and recreation services, such as supplying and servicing amusement devices in places of business operated by others; operating sports teams, clubs, or leagues that play games for recreational purposes; and guiding tours without using transportation equipment.

NAICS 713110 includes establishments known as amusement and theme parks that are primarily engaged in operating a variety of attractions, such as mechanical rides, water rides, games, shows, theme exhibits, refreshment stands, and picnic grounds. These establishments may lease space to others on a concession basis.

The services for which indexes are available include:

• Admissions
• Food and beverage sales
• Merchandise sales, games, and other services.

To measure changes in admission prices, companies report the current monthly average charge paid for access to the park for a specific type of admission. Admission types can include adult, child, and senior. For each admission type, the average prices are calculated separately for daily, weekly, and season passes. For example, the price for adult daily admissions is the average of the prices paid for all adult daily passes sold during the current month.

To measure changes in prices for food and beverage sales, merchandise sales, games, and other services, companies report current transaction prices or fees. Explicit quality adjustments will be performed for changes in these services, such as changes in beverage sizes. If food, beverage, and merchandise sales are provided by an entity that is leasing space in the park, these services are not primary to NAICS 713110, and the lease payments are included in the “other receipts” index for this industry.
