Systems Engineering Division (CG-5213)

Formerly (G-MSE-3) and (CG-3PSE-3)

Mission:

The Systems Engineering Division is responsible for developing and promulgating national regulations and standards that govern the safe design and construction of marine engineering equipment, including mechanical, electrical, and navigation equipment. Additionally, it is responsible for issuance of type approval certificates for floating electric waterlights, automatic identification systems (AIS), and voyage data recorders (VDR). Furthermore, the division participates in the development of national and international standards with committees such as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

Sections:

The Systems Engineering Division has three technical sections:

Mechanical Engineering provides for regulatory and standards development in the more traditional areas of marine engineering systems such as boilers & pressure vessels, hoses & piping, and turbines & engines as well as specialized systems such as marine sanitation devices, pollution prevention equipment, and resiliently seated valves.
Marine Electrical focuses on regulatory and standards development for vessel electrical equipment and systems, including cabling, lighting, grounding, and hazardous locations.
Navigation Equipment provides for type approval of vessel navigation equipment such as compass, rate of turn, sounding, and night vision equipment as well as floating electric waterlights, automatic identification systems (AIS), and voyage data recorders (VDR).
