Habitat Restoration/Protection Wetlands River systems Beaches/Dunes Offshore areas Mangroves Assisting Species at Risk Pollution Mitigation Non-Point Source Pollution Other (describe)
Fragmentation and loss of habitat has resulted in a drastic decline in wildlife dependent on these tidal wetlands. Waterfowl numbers have declined steadily, as they have nationwide, and shorebird numbers have also decreased. However, these migratory species are not impacted nearly as much as permanent residents such as the Federally listed endangered California clapper rail, salt marsh harvest mouse, and the black rail, which is listed as a California state threatened species and a Federal category 2 candidate species for listing. Fisheries resources and aquatic invertebrates have also been impacted by habitat loss as well as high contaminant levels. Habitat quality is deteriorating due to human impacts and there is a continual loss of tidal wetlands due to human encroachment and development.
The goal of this project is to restore the sight to fully tidal wetlands for the benefit of sensitive and endangered tidal marsh plants, wildlife and fish.
