GATEWAY TO FEDERAL JOBS ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB.

Washington, D.C. -- Uncle Sam still wants you.

Even in an era of downsizing, the Federal government -- the nations largest single employer -- brings in about 44,000 new, full-time hires a year to join its workforce of 1.9 million people.

Director Jim King of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) says that finding the right Federal job has been made a lot easier with the addition of the OPM Employment Information Homepage, USA JOBS, which was unveiled here Monday, September 16. It is accessible on Internet at: http://www.usajobs.gov

We not only wanted to make it easier to find a federal job opening, President Clinton felt we were obligated to make it easier, King said. With the administrative workforce taking the brunt of the nearly 240,000 job reductions among Federal workers since 1993, resulting in the smallest number of Executive Branch personnel in 30 years, we had to do a better job of making Federal job listings easily and readily available across the nation. This is particularly critical because, despite downsizing, the Federal government still receives about six-and-one-half million enquiries a year concerning job openings. Our new Web site is another aspect of the governing philosophy which requires that we do a better job of providing services while costing taxpayers less.

http://www.usajobs.gov lists all federal job openings OPM provides, and serves as a gateway to other employment information. King said Federal jobs nationwide, and around the globe, are carried on the new USA JOBS site.

If youre interested in a Federal job, this is the right place to go. Its one-stop shopping for Federal employment information, King said.

In announcing the new JOBS site, Director King said, This is one more step in making the job search as quick and easy as the touch of a hand. USA JOBS provides Internet users with access to job vacancy listings, general employment information, vacancy announcements, and forms needed to apply for jobs.

OPM developed this web site in partnership with the U.S. Postal Services Web Interactive Network of Government Services (WINGS) initiative. WINGS is a result of a National Performance Review recommendation and the Service to the Citizens Project to provide the public with easy and readily available government services.

The homepage, located at http://www.usajobs.gov, will provide worldwide job listings that are updated daily. Internet users can direct their job search by tailoring the occupational category, geographic location, and pay level. Internet users also will be able to access employment information and forms via personal computer.

OPM already operates the Federal Job Opportunities Board (FJOB), an electronic bulletin board system, that allows viewers access to the latest job listings from their personal computer and modem by dialing (912) 757-3100. In addition, Career America Connection, a telephone-based system, allows non-Internet users to conduct job searches by dialing 912-757-3000, or TDD Service at 912-744-2299. Job seekers also can access job information from touch screen computers located in major cities throughout the nation, OPM offices, Career Transition Centers, and some federal office buildings.

In addition to providing the latest in federal worldwide job openings, the Homepage also will list state, local government, and private sector job openings. Information on a wide variety of employment-related topics and programs, (including special information for veterans, students, people with disabilities, and outplacement information for current federal employees) also is available.
