I. Departmental/Bureau News

Current:
David Warner and Daniel Yule of the U.S. Geological Survey, Great Lakes Science Center will be instructors at an Acoustics Workshop September 8-12, 2008 sponsored by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Charlevoix Fisheries Research Station, Charlevoix, MI. The goal of this workshop is that all participants will be able to understand and analyze acoustic data at the end of the workshop.

The Great Lakes Beach Association annual meeting will be held September 15-17 in Porter, Indiana. Several talks and posters will be presented by Lake Michigan Ecological Research Station personnel:

  • Murulee Byappanahalli will present a talk entitled “Yearlong occurrence and population characteristics of Escherichia coli and enterococci in deep backshore sand of two Lake Michigan beaches” with coauthors Richard Whitman, Dawn Shively, and Meredith Nevers, USGS; and Evert Ting and Charles Tseng, Purdue University.

  • Meredith Nevers will present a talk entitled "Region-wide predictive beach models: Examples for Lake Michigan coastlines along Indiana and Chicago" with coauthor Richard Whitman.

  • Richard Whitman will present a talk entitled “Oceans Research Priority Plan: Improving Great Lakes Coastal Recreational Water Quality Monitoring and Forecasting” with USGS coauthors James R. Morris, Steven R. Corsi, Donna S. Francy, Sheridan K. Haack, and Meredith B. Nevers.

  • Murulee Byappanahalli, Dawn Shively, and Richard Whitman will co-author a talk entitled "Seasonal Stability of the Population Structure of Cladophora-associated Salmonella in Lake Michigan Watersheds" presented by Michael J. Sadowsky with Richard Sawdey, Satoshi Ishii, and John A. Ferguson of the University of Minnesota.

  • K. Vinodgopal, Indiana University, will present "Fluorescent Whitening Agents (FWAs) as Chemical Markers of Human Contamination" with USGS coauthors M. Byappanahalli and R. Whitman and Indiana University coauthors J. Peller, K. Murphy, R. Turpin, and T. Peller.

Martha Carlson and Greg Kennedy of the U.S. Geological Survey, Great Lakes Science Center were invited to give talks at the USACE Great Lakes and Ohio River Division (LRD) Project Managers' Conference in Traverse City, MI on Sept. 11, 2008. Greg's talk was entitled "Mapping habitat in support of water level regulation management in the Crystal River, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore." Martha presented a talk entitled "Interactions of hydrology and vegetation in ridge-and-swale wetlands." Martha also attended the group's all-day field trip to Sleeping Bear Dunes on Sept. 10 and gave a field-trip recap on Sept. 11.

Broadcast and Film - Meredith Nevers, USGS Ecologist with at the Lake Michigan Ecological Research Station of the Great Lakes Science Center was interviewed by Eilee Heikenen-Weiss of Chicago Public Radio on September 8, 2008 on the topic of fecal indicator issues at Chicago beaches and the potential influence of gull populations. The story is scheduled to air later in the week.
