HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

CONGRATULATING and honoring FRANKLIN LEAL SULLIVAN FOR BEING SELECTED FOR INDUCTION INTO THE AMERICAN LEAGUE BOSTON RED SOX HALL OF FAME.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, FRANK L. SULLIVAN was born on Thursday, January 23, 1930, in Hollywood, California; and

 

     WHEREAS, FRANK L. SULLIVAN broke into the big leagues on July 31, 1953, at the age of 23 as a right-handed batter and thrower, weighing 215 pounds and standing 6' 6 1/2" tall; and

 

     WHEREAS, a Red Sox workhorse in the mid-1950s, FRANK L. SULLIVAN was a two-time All-Star in 1955, an American League innings pitched leader in 1955, and had the remarkable statistic of completing 15-game winning seasons from 1954 through 1957; and

 

     WHEREAS, FRANK L. SULLIVAN'S career in the American League first started with his signing as an amateur free agent with the Boston Red Sox in 1948 and ended 15 years later in 1963 as a free agent with the Minnesota Twins, and his accomplishments include:

 

(1)  Posting a 90-80 record in 252 games;

 

(2)  Starting 201 games with the Boston Red Sox (1953-1960); and

 

(3)  Winning 13 or more games in five straight seasons (1954-1958), with a career high 18 victories and a 2.91 ERA in 1955;

 

and

 

     WHEREAS, the World Champion Boston Red sox issued a press release on February 25, 2008, welcoming eight new members to the class of 2008, who will be inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame; and

 

     WHEREAS, the class of 2008 consists of four players from the post-World War II era:  outfielder Mike Greenwell; left-handed pitcher Bill Lee; first baseman Mo Vaughn; and right-handed pitcher FRANK L. SULLIVAN; and

 

     WHEREAS, the induction dinner will take place on Friday, November 7, 2008, at the Marriott Copley Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts; and

 

     WHEREAS, FRANK L. SULLIVAN by the "throw of a dart," chose to and continues to be a full-time Kauai resident and positive contributor to the community and country; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2008, that this body hereby congratulates and honors FRANKLIN LEAL SULLIVAN for being selected as one of eight members of the Class of 2008 for induction into the World Champion American League, Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame, and extends to him its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
