HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

REQUESTING THAT THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK DEDICATE ITS SCHOOL IN HONOR OF MYRON "PINKY" THOMPSON, BY CHANGING ITS NAME TO THE "MYRON THOMPSON SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK".

 

 


     WHEREAS, Myron "Pinky" Thompson was a visionary who played a vital role in the establishment of the native Hawaiian health care system, Alu Like, Inc., and the Polynesian Voyaging Society, creating a legacy that continues to live on today; and

 

     WHEREAS, Pinky earned his bachelor's degree in sociology from Colby College and went on to earn his master's degree in social work from the University of Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, he served as the State Administrator under Governor John A. Burns; and

 

     WHEREAS, Pinky also served as the executive director of the Hawaii Department of Social Services and Housing, a position through which he gained national recognition fighting for welfare benefits for the people of Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, Pinky also served as a trustee for the Bishop Estate, during which time he helped to develop early childhood education programs through Kamehameha Schools; and

 

     WHEREAS, Myron "Pinky" Thompson was an extraordinary individual who made numerous contributions to the native Hawaiian community, to which he will always remain a leader and role model, inspiring future generations; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2008, that the University of Hawaii (UH) Board of Regents is requested to dedicate the UH School of Social Work in honor of Myron "Pinky" Thompson, by changing the school's name to the "Myron Thompson School of Social Work"; and


     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that in light of Myron "Pinky" Thompson's momentous contributions to the field of social work for the benefit of the entire state and its people, the Board of Regents is requested to consider making an exception to its rule that a UH building or school can be named only if a minimum $25,000,000 donation is made; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a plaque be placed at the entrance to the School of Social Work that explains Myron "Pinky" Thompson's contributions to UH as well as to the entire state; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the members of Hawaii's congressional delegation, Governor of the State of Hawaii, Chairperson of the University of Hawaii Board of Regents, and Dean of the University of Hawaii School of Social Work.
