Walled Lake Consolidated Schools

Walled Lake, Michigan
30% Improvement (2008)

An ENERGY STAR partner since 2005, Walled Lake Consolidated Schools is the largest school district in Oakland County, MI, and educates about 15,600 students in 22 school buildings. The mission of Walled Lake Consolidated Schools is to work in partnership with parents and the community to become the best educational system in America so all students demonstrate they are caring, responsible, and knowledgeable citizens. As part of this mission, district officials believe that an organization-wide energy management approach helps to enhance financial health, increase value, and protect the environment through the continuous improvement of energy performance.

Staff, faculty, and students in the district have implemented hundreds of improvements in energy consumption habits. Their energy improvement efforts, along with a partnership with Energy Education, Inc., have increased energy efficiency district-wide by more than 30 percent since their baseline year in 2003 and reduced carbon emissions by more than 21,000 tons annually. This is equivalent to the emissions from more than 3,600 cars annually or planting more than 4,500 acres of trees, and has resulted in cost savings of over $5 million in the past 4 years. Twenty of the district's 22 school buildings earned the ENERGY STAR in 2007 as a result of this increase in energy efficiency.
